Tailoring courses for women in Nepal

In our newsletter 2023 we asked for donations to start an adult education project for young women in the Nepalese city of Chitwan in cooperation with the Nepalese United Serve Society (contact through our long-time partner Bishnu Parajuli). In Nepal, women from rural areas have few prospects other than to marry abroad out of financial need - usually to India or China.

In order for the women to have better opportunities, it is important that they receive an education. In this way, they can finance themselves and their families. The project offers nine months of free tailoring training for the women. After the training, they can buy out the sewing machines for a small amount of money to start their own business. Since the electricity supply in Nepal is not that stable, powerless sewing machines were purchased.

Thanks to all our loyal donors, the funds for sewing machines, teaching materials and instructors' fees were raised very quickly. However, another building had to be found, since the former AGAPE school, which was originally intended, was no longer available. But also this problem could be solved quickly thanks to our local partner association and another former school building was provided by the government free of charge.

The first 20 course participants started their training in May 2023. The course is very well received and the advance registrations for the next course are also numerous. Herewith a few impressions from the first course:

Naehkurs1

The women learn to make patterns from paper. Here they are transferring the measurements taken.

Naehkurs2

Each course participant has her own sewing machine.

Naehkurs3

The course participants take notes in order to put into practice what they have learned at the end of the theoretical part.
